Bethesda's Todd Howard: No Remakes for Original Fallout Games Planned

18 Jun 2024

In a recent interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Bethesda CEO Todd Howard provided insights into the company's direction regarding the beloved Fallout series. While much of the conversation revolved around the controversy surrounding Starfield's DLC pricing and Bethesda's upcoming projects, Howard also shed light on the future of the original Fallout games, which were initially developed by Black Isle Studios and are now under Bethesda's ownership.

Preserving the Classics

Howard made it unequivocally clear that Bethesda has no plans to remake the first games in the series—Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout: Tactics. Instead, the company is focusing on ensuring that these classic titles remain accessible to players on PC. "A main priority for us is to make sure they're available and you can still play them on the PC," Howard stated. "And making sure that they run OK."

This commitment to accessibility highlights Bethesda's respect for the legacy of the original games. By ensuring that these titles are playable on modern systems, Bethesda is preserving an important part of gaming history for both longtime fans and new players alike.

The Role of the Modding Community

While Bethesda may not be revisiting the early isometric Fallout games, Howard acknowledged the dedicated modding community that continues to enhance and improve the gaming experience. He emphasized that the priority for Bethesda is to ensure that players can still enjoy these classic titles, even if they may not be receiving official remakes or remasters.

"The modding community has always been a vital part of our games," Howard noted. "They bring new life to our older titles and create experiences that we might not have envisioned."

No First-Person Fallout 2 from Bethesda

For fans who are eager for a first-person Fallout 2 experience, Howard confirmed that Bethesda is not pursuing such a project. However, he noted that a group of dedicated modders is working on creating a mod that will allow players to experience the game from a new perspective.

This revelation underscores the symbiotic relationship between Bethesda and its community. While the company focuses on maintaining the integrity and accessibility of its classic titles, it also supports and encourages the creativity of its fans who wish to expand upon these beloved games.

In summary, Todd Howard's recent interview provides a clear picture of Bethesda's approach to its classic Fallout titles. By prioritizing accessibility and supporting the modding community, Bethesda ensures that these iconic games continue to be enjoyed by generations of gamers.
