Microsoft has started testing an accelerated version of its Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) feature and an updated Smart App Control in Windows 11, aiming to enhance boot failure resolutions for IT administrators. These updates are currently accessible to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels as part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7070 (KB5070300).
Enhanced Recovery Process
The primary improvement in QMR involves a streamlined recovery process that utilizes a single automated scan to address boot issues, replacing the previous approach of repetitive scanning cycles. If Windows 11 encounters a failure due to configuration changes or problematic drivers, it boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and initiates QMR. This tool facilitates remote problem-solving by sending crash data to Microsoft, allowing IT admins to diagnose and rectify issues effectively without needing physical access to the affected machines.
Smart App Control and System Reliability
Additionally, Microsoft has refined the Smart App Control settings, enabling users to toggle this feature without performing a clean install. This modification is designed to improve flexibility and ease of use. Microsoft also announced enhancements to system reliability following a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), further aiming to improve the overall user experience on Windows 11.
These updates stem from lessons learned after the CrowdStrike Falcon incident at Ignite 2024, which left many devices unbootable. These latest iterations of QMR and Smart App Control reflect Microsoft's continued efforts to address such system vulnerabilities and enhance stability and usability for users and IT professionals alike.
