Microsoft has introduced support for WebP images as desktop backgrounds in Windows 11, starting with Build 26220.7653. As of 2026-01-17, testers can access this feature, which will roll out to Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 versions.
New Image Format Support
Windows 11 users can now choose WebP images in Settings under Personalization > Desktop Background. WebP offers smaller file sizes compared to JPG and PNG while maintaining quality.
Future Video Wallpaper Plans
Microsoft plans to integrate video backgrounds into Windows 11, supporting formats such as .webm and .mp4. Although observed in earlier builds, this feature isn't included in recent releases.
For now, Windows 11 focuses on expanding image format support with WebP, enhancing customization options without needing PNG or JPG conversions.
