Meta Platforms is enhancing its scam detection tools on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp following a case in Solon, Ohio, where a 63-year-old man lost over $1 million in a cryptocurrency scam. The incident began with a message on Facebook Messenger and escalated when the conversation moved to WhatsApp, leading to fraudulent investments.
Strengthened AI and User Warnings
As part of National Consumer Protection Week, Meta announced the deployment of advanced artificial intelligence systems to review suspicious messages from unknown contacts. Users can activate scam detection in Messenger's privacy settings to receive alerts and guidance if messages are flagged. Additionally, WhatsApp will now include screen-share warnings when unknown callers request screen sharing, a common tactic used by scammers.
Broader Fraud Trends and Meta's Response
The FBI reports that Ohioans aged 60 and older lost more than $95 million to fraud in 2024, highlighting the widespread nature of such scams. Meta's Public Policy Director, Lori Moylan, advises users to verify information through official websites and customer service channels. In response to the growing threat, Meta removed eight million accounts and 21,000 pages posing as customer support in the first half of 2025.
Investigators identified several red flags in the Solon case, including contact from a stranger, a rapid shift to cryptocurrency discussions, moving conversations to private platforms, and promises of high returns. These indicators serve as a warning to consumers to remain vigilant against similar scams.
