Bungie Lays Off 220 Employees in Cost-Cutting Restructuring Effort

01 Aug 2024

In a significant restructuring move, Bungie, the renowned studio behind the iconic Destiny franchise, has announced the layoff of 220 employees, representing approximately 17% of its workforce. This decision was communicated by studio head Pete Parsons through an email posted on the company’s website. Parsons emphasized that these layoffs are essential for reducing costs and sharpening the studio's focus on its flagship titles, Destiny and Marathon.

Strategic Realignment with Sony

In addition to the layoffs, 155 positions will transition to Bungie’s parent company, Sony Interactive Entertainment. This strategic shift is aimed at enhancing the integration between Bungie and Sony, fostering a closer collaboration that could yield innovative developments in the gaming landscape. Furthermore, Bungie is collaborating with PlayStation Studios to establish a new development team dedicated to a project currently in the incubation phase.

Parsons expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “This morning, I’m sharing with all of you some of the most difficult changes we’ve ever had to make as a studio.” He cited rising development costs, industry shifts, and ongoing economic challenges as key factors necessitating these substantial changes. The aim is to streamline operations and align development efforts with more realistic goals.

The impact of these layoffs will resonate across all levels of the organization, affecting many executive and senior leadership roles. Parsons acknowledged the emotional toll of this decision, particularly on those departing employees who have made significant contributions to Bungie. To support those affected, the company is offering a comprehensive exit package that includes severance, bonuses, and health coverage.

Despite the recent success of The Final Shape, Parsons noted that the broader economic realities have compelled the studio to reassess its operational strategies. “After exhausting all other mitigation options, this has become a necessary decision to refocus our studio and our business with more realistic goals and viable financials,” he stated.

This marks the second round of layoffs at Bungie within a year, following a previous reduction of 100 staff members in October 2023, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the studio in an evolving industry landscape.
