The Files app, a popular third-party alternative to Windows 11's built-in File Explorer, has been updated to version 4.0.28, offering improved context menus and several bug fixes.
Enhanced Context Menus
The latest update makes the Properties option a primary action across the sidebar and home page context menus, enhancing consistency. Users can now disable the “Pin to Start” and “Pin to Sidebar” options under Settings → General → Context Menu Options.
New Features and Fixes
Files v4.0.28 introduces support for the Microsoft Store version of Dropbox, allowing the app to detect cloud drives. Additionally, users can now customize icons for URL and shortcut file types via the Properties customization page. The update also provides an option to disable smooth scrolling from Settings → General → Scrolling.
Bug fixes include restoring the 'Open With' menu for script files, fixing tab switching with the scroll wheel, preventing SEER from reopening after manual closure, and correcting default switching between Files Stable and Files Preview. Other fixes address hiding the Info Pane on the Release Notes page, resolving tag searches containing spaces, and improving the display of hidden item file types.
Performance Improvements
The Files app team is actively working on performance enhancements, particularly to make thumbnails load faster. Meanwhile, Microsoft is addressing broader Windows 11 issues, including its AI strategy and File Explorer features. The Files app continues to provide features like tabs, column view, file preview, and a customizable interface, meeting user demands for a more versatile file management experience.
