Windows 11 Update Enforces OneDrive Backups, Users Report Deactivation

In a surprising move, Microsoft has started to enforce OneDrive backups on Windows 11 without seeking user consent. This shift in policy means that as soon as you set up a new Windows 11 machine, you might find your desktop cluttered with files and folders from previous backups, leading to potential frustration.

Previously, users had the option to activate automatic folder backups manually. Microsoft would send periodic notifications to remind users about the feature if it wasn't enabled. However, the tech giant now seems to have taken a more assertive approach, assuming that everyone wants OneDrive backups activated by default.

How to Deactivate OneDrive Backups

If you prefer not to have your Windows computer automatically back up everything on your desktop—or other folders—to OneDrive, there are steps you can take to deactivate this feature:

1. Access OneDrive Settings: Right-click on the OneDrive icon located at the bottom right of your taskbar notification area. If the icon is not visible, you may need to expand the field by clicking the small arrow. Then, go to the settings gear icon and select Settings.
2. Manage Backup Settings: Click on the Sync and backup section in the left sidebar, then select Manage backup. Deactivate all the folders that you do not want backed up to OneDrive and confirm the changes.
3. Older OneDrive Versions: If you are using an older version of OneDrive with the classic tabbed interface, navigate to the Backup tab, click Manage backup, and then select Stop backup. You will need to confirm this setting again.

For those who wish to avoid automatic backups entirely, uninstalling OneDrive could be the simplest solution. However, it's worth noting that Microsoft might not be pleased with this decision.
