Germ, a privacy-focused startup, has launched the first private messenger integrated into the Bluesky app, offering end-to-end encrypted messaging without requiring users to leave the platform or share phone numbers.
Integration and Functionality
Bluesky users can now add a Germ badge to their profiles, enabling private messaging with a single tap. This action triggers an iOS App Clip, allowing users to authenticate with their AT Protocol handle and start secure conversations immediately. Installing the full Germ app remains optional.
Security and Standards
Germ employs Messaging Layer Security (MLS), an IETF-approved standard designed for dynamic groups and forward secrecy. The integration with the AT Protocol ensures encryption and identity are independent of any single company. Messages are encrypted at the device level, ensuring neither Germ nor Bluesky can decrypt them.
Adoption and Future Prospects
Following the integration announcement, Germ's daily active users reportedly increased fivefold. The App Clip feature reduces friction for new users, while the profile badge enhances visibility. Germ's standalone iOS app is in public beta in North America and Europe. The company is focusing on core messaging capabilities, with potential future monetization through paid tools for advanced users.
