Windows 10 Support Nears End as Users Resist Windows 11

27 Jan 2026

Windows 10's extended support concludes on 2026-10-13, yet a significant number of users persist with the older system despite Windows 11's availability. The reluctance poses potential security challenges as extended security updates cease.

Support Timeline and Current Usage

Support for Windows 10 officially ended on 2025-10-14, but extended security updates (ESU) remain available until 2026-10-13. ESET reports that in Germany, 21 million PCs—or 48% of households—still operate on Windows 10.

According to ESET, Windows 11 adoption has increased slightly, but over half of German users have yet to transition. With 21.5 million users on Windows 11 by late 2025, this marks a modest increase of 3.6 million from August 2025.

User Preference and Market Trends

Windows 10 continues to be favored among German consumers—an inclination towards stability. Yet, Alexander Opel of ESET warns that delaying OS upgrades further could result in security vulnerabilities.

Among gamers, the shift to Windows 11 is more pronounced. A Steam survey from December 2025 indicates that Windows 11 dominates with 66.60% usage among gamers, suggesting a transition pattern linked to hardware capabilities.

Impending Changes and User Action

The dependency on ESU and reluctance to transition might prompt Microsoft to introduce aggressive upgrade prompts before 2026-10-13. Users may need to consider upgrading to Windows 11 or acquiring newer hardware to maintain support.

This scenario highlights the persistent consumer hesitation that could affect future technology transitions. As Windows 10's support timeline draws to an end, the pressure mounts on users to make informed choices.
