Android 17 beta 1, launched on 2026-02-13, introduces several enhancements to the Pixel Launcher UI, offering users more customization options and a streamlined interface.
Pixel Launcher UI Updates
The home screen search bar in Android 17 beta 1 has been redesigned to feature a slimmer profile, moving away from the thick colored borders of Android 16. This change brings back a simpler, more classic look. A notable addition is the customizable shortcut within the search bar, which defaults to AI Mode but can be swapped for options like Gemini Live, Translate, Song Search, Weather, and Dictionary. Users can update the search bar and launch the selected feature by tapping the shortcut. However, the voice search and Google Lens shortcuts remain non-replaceable.
Widget and Settings Adjustments
The update also allows users to remove the At a Glance widget from the Pixel home screen. This can be done by long-pressing the widget and adjusting settings in the Pixel Launcher. Additional UI tweaks include a settings icon at the bottom of the volume panel for easier access to volume controls and a refreshed brightness icon in Quick Settings. These modifications may evolve in future beta releases.
According to Android Central, the customizable search-bar shortcut is a significant improvement, enhancing the flexibility of the Pixel home screen, particularly for users who frequently access features like sports updates or Song Search. Further customization options are anticipated in upcoming updates.
