Cry of Fear is a remarkable total conversion mod of the original Half-Life, offering an intense horror experience without using any files from either game. Despite its outdated engine, it delivers one of the best horror stories available on PC, and it's completely free if you own Half-Life. The game begins with your character waking up in a dark alley, confused and unaware of how he got there. This classic horror setup evolves into an exceptional adventure. Played from a first-person perspective, you start with just a cellphone, a camera, and a knife. As you progress, you'll uncover new threats and acquire better weapons and equipment, essential for facing some of the game's most dangerous enemies. While its graphics may seem dated, the eerie atmosphere and creature design create genuine terror. Cry of Fear is an outstanding mod that rivals the scares of Silent Hill, making it a must-play for horror fans.
I feel a bit torn about Cry of Fear. A lot of the horror elements really worked for me, but I got stuck on a puzzle for way too long, which took away from the experience. Still, I appreciate the effort!
