Motion Twin has officially ceased updates for its popular game Dead Cells, directing its efforts towards a new project titled Windblown. This marked change aims to leverage the successful foundation built from Dead Cells to elevate development efforts on Windblown, a co-op roguelike experience currently in early access.
Transition to Windblown
Dead Cells, originally released in 2018 and critically acclaimed for its innovative mechanics and captivating storytelling, has amassed millions of players. Motion Twin delegated ongoing updates in 2019 to Evil Empire to manage further development. However, in 2024, Motion Twin instructed Evil Empire to halt these updates, allowing the team to consolidate focus on Windblown.
Reasons for Sunsetting Dead Cells
Artists and developers involved in both projects have expressed that this decision was advantageous. Gwen Massé, an artist and level designer, and Yannick Berthier, co-creative director of Windblown, explained that ending Dead Cells updates preserved the integrity of the original vision, while it also freed the studio to focus resources fully on new endeavors.
Berthier noted that the success of Dead Cells not only expanded Motion Twin's capabilities but also paved the way for the team to undertake more ambitious projects.
Windblown introduces cooperative play to the fast-paced roguelike genre, offering players a fresh experience. As it enters early access, Motion Twin anticipates that focusing its creative and developmental energies on Windblown will lead to new innovations in the gaming industry.
