Microsoft Windows Bug Causes Operational Disruptions in Colorado Springs

19 Jul 2024

The global technology outage that has been disrupting banks, flights, and media outlets worldwide has also made its presence felt in Colorado Springs. The issue began on Friday when an update bug in the Microsoft Windows Operating system caused widespread disruptions, according to cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz.

While the bug only affected those operating with Microsoft Windows, it did not impact every system. CrowdStrike has stated that the problem behind the outage is not believed to be a security incident or cybersecurity attack.

Local Government Services Affected

Local officials have reported that operations at the Colorado Springs Municipal Court, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles have been impacted. The state DMV’s website indicates that most of its services, including online DMV services, driver’s license and ID services, DMV call centers, and MV express kiosks are experiencing outages.

In a social media announcement, the city of Colorado Springs stated that the Municipal Court would be closed due to “IT outages.” Individuals needing to reschedule a court appearance are advised to call 719-385-5928 and leave a message.

Impact on Travel

Several flights at the Colorado Springs Airport have also been delayed as a result of the global technology outage. For the latest arrival and departure status updates, travelers are encouraged to click or tap here.

Emergency Services on High Alert

Furthermore, the Colorado Springs Police and Fire Department’s 911 Emergency Communications Center is on a priority dispatch and accident alert status due to the global Microsoft Windows failure and related CrowdStrike issues. Despite the technical challenges, officials have assured that 911 phone lines and department radios remain operational, and regular patrols are active in the city.

The department’s IT resources are actively working to resolve the technical issues and ensure that essential services are restored as soon as possible.
