Google Enhances AI Mode with Improved Link Display

20 Feb 2026

Google has introduced an update to its AI Mode in Search, enhancing how links are displayed to users. This change aims to facilitate quicker access to sources and improve fact-checking capabilities.

Improved Link Display

Announced by Robby Stein, Google's VP for Search, the update modifies how links appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. On desktop, groups of links will now be accessible through a floating pop-up sub-menu when users hover over the link icon. This icon has been made more prominent and now displays the first source's logo and name. On mobile devices, users will continue to tap links to access them.

Enhanced User Experience

The new link display is designed to help users engage with source material more efficiently, allowing them to open links in new tabs directly from the sub-menu. This update follows previous enhancements, such as the addition of personal-assistant features for booking appointments and the integration of Gemini 3 to improve handling of follow-up questions and query context.

Despite these advancements, Android Central advises users to continue verifying source links to ensure accuracy. This update underscores Google's commitment to improving user interaction and information verification within its AI-driven search features.
