Independent lab AV-Comparatives has released its 2025 report, evaluating 19 antivirus solutions for Windows on various performance metrics, including malware detection and real-world threat protection. This comprehensive report assesses products across multiple tests conducted over the year.
Top Performers Revealed
Based on cumulative test results, AV-Comparatives awarded Top-Rated Product status to Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, ESET, G Data, Kaspersky, and Norton. Avast and AVG achieved Advanced+ levels in six out of seven tests, earning Gold awards for overall performance. Bitdefender secured a Gold award in the Advanced Threat Protection category, pairing Advanced+ and Advanced ratings across tests.
ESET excelled with Advanced+ ratings in all tests, earning Gold for Advanced Threat Protection. Similarly, Kaspersky received Advanced+ in all categories, clinching Gold awards for malware protection and system integration proficiency. Norton was recognized with seven Advanced+ ratings and a Gold award for real-world protection.
Considerations for Users
While other products like McAfee, Microsoft Defender, Avira, and Panda showed a mix of results, AV-Comparatives emphasized the importance of consideration beyond technical performance—such as pricing, support, and features—when selecting antivirus software. Several free solutions demonstrated competitive protection but may lack advanced features and support provided in paid versions.
Although auto-renewal and subscription practices were mentioned as critical factors, users are advised to utilize trial versions to thoroughly assess both protection quality and system impact. The report underscores the viability of free antivirus products, suggesting that they can compete with paid options in specific scenarios.
