Meta has announced that it will shut down messenger.com by April 2026, redirecting users to facebook.com/messages. This change follows the discontinuation of the standalone Messenger desktop app in December 2025.
Transition Details
Users of messenger.com have been given less than 60 days to transition before the shutdown. After April 2026, users will be automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages. Meta assures that users without a Facebook account can still access their chats via the Facebook web interface or the mobile Messenger app.
Message Migration
To facilitate the transition, Meta provides users with the option to save and migrate their conversations, including messages from Facebook Marketplace, by setting up a PIN. This move is part of Meta's ongoing efforts to consolidate messaging services into Facebook, a process that began in 2023.
Future Access Uncertainty
While Meta has confirmed that users can continue chatting without a Facebook account, it remains uncertain whether this option will be available in the long term. The consolidation reflects Meta's strategy to streamline its messaging platforms.
