Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games, emphasized the continued role of PC gaming as a key innovation hub. Speaking at the EVE Fanfest on 2025-11-24, Pétursson highlighted the openness of PC platforms.
Innovation and Openness
Pétursson noted the low barriers to entry on PC platforms, such as a modest Steam fee, as vital to fostering success. He argued this openness allows for unexpected innovations and contributes to PC gaming's resilience against predictions of its decline.
He stated that while mobile gaming is currently focused on refinement, PC gaming thrives on experimentation, as seen in games like Cuphead.
Modding and Technical Continuity
Modding was highlighted as a unique strength of PC gaming. Despite consoles becoming more like PCs, they lack the same vibrant modding culture. Pétursson also mentioned the technical continuity of PC gaming, which allows for the operation of legacy code, such as ancient EVE Online scripts and even 1990s VRML processors.
Upcoming developments were also discussed: EVE Frontier will see a major update on 2025-11-27, and the FPS companion, EVE Vanguard, remains in active development.
