Esports is gaining recognition as a legitimate career choice, according to a new study by Logitech G. The research, conducted in 2026, surveyed 18,000 individuals across 12 countries, revealing that 54% globally view professional gaming as a viable career path. This perception is particularly strong among Gen Z, with 67% endorsing esports as a professional option.
Global Acceptance and Growth
The study highlights a significant cultural shift, with nearly 8% of respondents expressing a desire to pursue a career in esports if given the chance to restart their careers. This interest surpasses traditional roles like politicians and recruiters. Notably, Gen Z shows the highest enthusiasm, with 15% ranking esports as a top career ambition, compared to 10% of Millennials and just 3% of Boomers.
Countries such as Brazil, South Korea, China, and Switzerland are leading in support, with 87%, 82%, 79%, and 70% of respondents respectively acknowledging esports as a legitimate career.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite its growth, esports faces challenges including financial risks, high competition, and societal skepticism. Approximately 42% of respondents cited financial risk as a barrier, while 34% pointed to intense competition. There is a call for more mainstream media coverage, professional training facilities, and clearer educational pathways to support aspiring gamers.
The global esports audience reached 611 million in 2024, with projections of 641 million by the end of 2025. The industry, valued at $2.1 billion, is expected to grow to $7.5 billion by 2030, driven by sponsorship revenue. Logitech G's Derek Perez emphasized the evolving cultural significance of esports, noting its role in creating pathways into technology and high-performance careers.
