Overwatch 2 Takes Bold Risks Despite Poor Steam Ratings

27 Aug 2025

In the challenging landscape of multiplayer gaming in 2025, Overwatch 2 faces a significant obstacle: a stark contrast between its active player feedback and its public reputation. Despite its persistently low rating of 25% on Steam, game director Aaron Keller reports active players consider the game to be in its optimal state.

The declining player numbers, now slightly above 101,500, have not deterred Blizzard from embarking on bold new ventures to rejuvenate interest, particularly via the introduction of Stadium. This new mode has drawn praise, serving as a marked turning point post-launch and demonstrating the development team’s commitment to innovation.

Revamping Strategies with Stadium

Described as the most pivotal post-release update, Stadium offers a freshly designed, round-based format with Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) elements, featuring numerous player perks that revitalize the gameplay dynamic. Keller highlights that the risk taken with Stadium’s release was deliberate and its success has paved the way for further creativity.

Entering Season 18, Blizzard amplifies its focus on Stadium by incorporating over 60 new perks, ensuring every character receives at least one. This update addresses the previously underperforming perks and enhances the gameplay experience. The season also introduces four more heroes and two additional maps alongside the Payload Rush mode, integrating Stadium into quickplay as a main feature.

The development team, while keen on exploring new gameplay experiences, continues to prioritize maintaining the game’s core competitive PvP integrity. As Keller notes, there is a balancing act involved when introducing new content to avoid overwhelming players, which requires strategic simplification of the current lineup before diving into further enhancements.

Future Prospects and Narrative Expansion

Speculation about Overwatch 2's narrative possibilities remains. While Keller admits the narrative design team is actively engaged in numerous creative facets of the game, including naming perks, heroes, and maps, they are currently not ready to publicly share future plans for narrative or PvE development.

As Season 18 goes live, bringing innovative changes and a comprehensive set of new perks, Blizzard remains steadfast in its intent to take risks, clearly aiming to reinvigorate and expand its player base despite the constraints imposed by current public perceptions. Overwatch 2's journey seems set on a path of evolution and resilience, harnessing both its experienced community feedback and daring new strategies.
