Block Planet Creates Spherical Gameplay in a Minecraft World

02 Sep 2025

The innovative game demo Block Planet, designed by developer Bowerbyte, brings a fresh twist to the traditional Minecraft gaming experience by transforming its flat world into a spherical planet. This transformation goes beyond aesthetic change, introducing unique challenges and exciting possibilities for players.

Reimagining the World

Minecraft, known for its vast and nearly limitless flat worlds, offers players the freedom to build without the constraints of Earth's curvature. However, Block Planet reinvents this dynamic by introducing a truly spherical world. Building a sphere from cubic voxels involves filtering block centers around a point, but ensuring accurate gravity and consistent block sizes from the planet’s surface to its core proves more challenging.

Bowerbyte tackled these complexities by first converting the 2D Minecraft grid to a 3D sphere. This process began by segmenting the flat world into six large sections, mapping these onto the faces of a cube, and then subdividing each face into smaller squares. These were pushed outward, simulating balloon expansion, which inevitably distorted the squares into quads. To address this, Bowerbyte pre-distorted the grid, resulting in a natural-looking final output.

Dynamic Depth and Gravity

Introducing depth created additional complications, particularly as blocks closer to the center appeared thinner and risked turning into triangles, altering their structural integrity. To manage this, Bowerbyte intelligently increased block counts only when distortion was noticeable, exclusively adding whole numbers to maintain alignment. These blocks were organized into concentric shells to streamline processing.

The implementation of a realistic gravity system was crucial, ensuring that players remain anchored to the planet's surface, defying any tendency to ‘fall off’ into space. This central gravity keeps gameplay intuitive and immersive, mimicking how gravity affects movement on a smaller scale planet.

An Innovative Exploration

Block Planet, developed as a proof of concept during Bowerbyte's spare time, is not currently intended to advance into a full-fledged game due to time constraints. However, the developer continues to experiment with the project, highlighting its value as a spherical and more lifelike alternative to Minecraft's traditionally flat landscapes.

While Block Planet remains a demo, it represents a significant step forward in the evolution of sandbox games, showcasing both the creativity and technical acumen required to reinvent established norms. As players explore this spherical world, they engage with a new facet of gaming creativity, broadening the horizons of virtual construction and exploration.
