Google has announced a major investment in revamping the user experience of the Gemini app, dubbed "UX 2.0." According to Logan Kilpatrick, product lead for Google AI Studio, the update will address the app's awkward interface by significantly enhancing its design and functionality.
User Interface Enhancements
The Gemini app's redesign provides a refreshed homepage with a clean greeting banner, a darker background for dark mode, and a streamlined layout that emphasizes ease of use. New action chips have been organized vertically for easier navigation, offering quick access to tools like "Create image," "Deep Research," and "Write anything." A new "My Stuff" section centralizes user-created content including images, videos, and Canvas projects.
Native macOS Client
In addition to UI changes, a native Gemini client for macOS is underway, removing the previous browser-only restriction. Kilpatrick confirmed this development, highlighting features such as drag-and-drop functionality and deeper system integration. A native app aims to deliver Mac users a more stable and integrated experience, streamlining creative tasks.
Addressing Usability Challenges
Gemini has been powerful yet often criticized for poor usability. The UX 2.0 overhaul and native macOS app are designed to enhance the user experience significantly as competition from companies like Anthropic intensifies.
