Google continues to refine its Home web app, pushing it steadily closer to functionality parity with its mobile version. The recent update introduces a Devices tab, extending support for various smart devices such as lights, thermostats, smart plugs, and locks. Despite these enhancements, the experience remains incomplete, with some devices displaying a message that reads, "Controls for this device are not yet supported."
The updated interface takes cues from the Google Home tablet layout, presenting devices alphabetically by room. Navigation is facilitated through a sidebar and a tile grid, enabling users to manage their smart home setup effectively. A single tap on these tiles allows users to control device functions such as adjusting thermostat temperatures and modes, controlling smart plugs and locks, and modifying light brightness. However, the absence of a color picker for lights limits full customization.
Media and Camera Control
While the update includes the presence of media hardware, users are currently unable to control these devices via the web app. On a positive note, camera control capabilities remain accessible through the feed view, maintaining a level of security and monitoring for users enrolled in the preview program.
Google’s trajectory with the Home web app represents a consistent effort to expand control and integration across smart home ecosystems. The company clarifies that this rollout is a preview, featuring limited functionalities while assuring users that additional device types and controls are in the pipeline.
