Google Home is rolling out a significant update in March 2023, introducing new automation starters and security features for its users. This update includes enhancements to the Nest x Yale Smart Lock integration, allowing users to view lock history, receive notifications, and check battery status directly from the Google Home app.
Automation and Security Enhancements
With the latest update, Google Home users can expect more automation starters and conditions, such as "Security system is armed," "Device is plugged in," and "Device docked." These features aim to streamline smart home management and enhance security. The Nest x Yale Smart Lock features are now exiting preview and will be gradually available to all users.
Gemini for Home Improvements
Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home, announced that Gemini for Home has been refined to better target devices at the room level. For instance, commands like "turn off the kitchen" will now specifically target lights without affecting other smart devices in the room. Additionally, unassigned items will no longer be included in general voice requests.
The updates also bring improvements to the accuracy and reliability of notes, lists, reminders, calendars, and alarms. Google Home Premium subscribers will benefit from the "Live Search" feature, which allows real-time camera stream viewing. The update aims to enhance the overall reliability of voice-triggered automations and improve responses to weather and local news queries.
Enhanced User Experience
Since entering early access in October 2023, Gemini for Home has introduced features like Ask Home and enhanced camera capabilities. The current update bundle focuses on fixing issues and improving the reliability of Google's smart home ecosystem, ensuring a smoother user experience.
