This decision is significant as 36.5% of Firefox users are still utilizing Windows 10, making this sustained compatibility crucial for a large segment of the user base.
Full Feature Support Continues
The company has clarified that, unlike their limited support for Windows 7 and 8, Windows 10 users will continue to receive comprehensive updates alongside those on Windows 11. This includes rapid security patching, often within 24 hours, ensuring users remain protected against vulnerabilities.
This move comes shortly after Microsoft issued its last regular security update for Windows 10, now providing updates only to paying customers and special program participants. With many users unable to transition to Windows 11 due to stricter hardware requirements, Firefox's ongoing support becomes even more critical.
Strategic Support for Legacy Systems
Mozilla's commitment to support aligns with its broader strategy against forced obsolescence. Recently, it extended security updates for Windows 8/8.1 and older macOS versions until March 2026. This contrasts with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, which have ceased support for these older systems.
Furthermore, Mozilla advises Windows 10 users to consider enrolling in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates program and utilizing Firefox Sync. Sync provides encrypted backups of browsing data, facilitating easier transitions to new machines if needed.
