Positive Growth in US PC Market with 5% Sales Increase in Q1 2024

27 Jun 2024

Last year’s dismal performance in PC shipments has taken a turn for the better in the US market. Sales have seen a 5% year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2024, with expectations of further growth throughout the year and into 2025.

Analysts had predicted a recovery in 2024, and their optimism has been justified. The expected 69 million PC shipments this year represent a 5% annual growth rate, with a projected 8% improvement to 76 million units in 2025.

The surge in sales is attributed to several factors, including the end-of-support date for Windows 10 in October 2025. Users unwilling to pay for Extended Security Updates (ESUs) are likely to transition to Windows 11, which requires updated hardware like the TPM 2.0 module.

Additionally, the launch of new processor releases from AMD and Intel in 2024 has contributed to the positive momentum. While opinions on the new Snapdragon-powered AI laptops vary, the industry buzz around them is expected to drive a new wave of PC sales among consumers.

Greg Davis, an analyst at Canalys, highlighted the potential for a strong refresh cycle in the coming quarters. He noted that the availability of on-device AI capabilities, coupled with exciting new products and user experiences, will appeal to both consumers and businesses in the Windows and Apple ecosystems.
