The tactical shooter Ready or Not, developed by Void Interactive, has marked a significant milestone, selling 13 million copies across all platforms. Since its debut in Steam Early Access in December 2021, the game exited Early Access in December 2023 with expectations riding high among its fanbase.
In a notable expansion of its reach, Ready or Not made a successful launch on consoles, selling three million copies within just two months of its release on July 15. This console debut, however, was not without its challenges.
Content Modifications and Community Backlash
To align with console ratings, Void Interactive opted for certain content modifications, including the removal of dismemberment and some nudity. These decisions sparked a wave of controversy, as fans voiced their discontent, leading to a barrage of negative reviews. As a result, the game experienced a significant dip, registering a 'Mostly Negative' status in its Recent Reviews category.
Void Interactive attributed the negative feedback to what it perceives as misconceptions and misinformation regarding the changes. Despite this turbulence, the game’s overall ratings have managed to bounce back to 'Mostly Positive'. However, there are persistent criticisms aimed at the perceived censorship and a visual downgrade due to a low-texture bug, an issue the developer has publicly acknowledged.
Continued Popularity and New Content
Despite the controversies, Ready or Not continues to attract a dedicated following, particularly among players who enjoy intense solo or cooperative SWAT gameplay. The developer has bolstered the game’s offering by introducing two new difficulty modes and two new missions, which have been well-received by the community.
The ongoing engagement from players suggests that the tactical shooter still holds a strong position in the market, exemplifying a resilient player base that is willing to navigate controversies and embrace new updates, ready or not.
