University of Essex Launches World's First Minecraft Psychology Lab

14 Aug 2024

The University of Essex has made an innovative leap in the realm of education by establishing what it claims to be the world’s first “Minecraft psychology lab.” This pioneering initiative taps into the expansive universe of Minecraft, a beloved computer game that has captivated millions since its launch in 2011, allowing players to create their own worlds and rules.

Exploring Psychology Through Gaming

Dr. Wijnand van Tilburg, a lecturer at the university, emphasized the lab’s potential as a dynamic platform for students to engage in learning, research, and experimentation within the game. “It offers a uniquely malleable environment to study and learn about the psychology behind social behavior, problem-solving, and creativity,” he noted, highlighting the lab’s versatility.

Moreover, Dr. van Tilburg pointed out that the lab is particularly beneficial for neurodivergent students, providing an online environment that many find more comfortable. “Minecraft allows us to work with these students and support them effectively,” he explained.

Located in the Department of Psychology on the Colchester campus, the lab features six dedicated booths where students can integrate Minecraft into their coursework. “Hundreds of millions of people around the world live, laugh, and learn through gaming,” Dr. van Tilburg remarked. “How we interact online is an increasingly major area to research.” His curiosity extends to understanding the elements that draw players to Minecraft, which he finds equally fascinating as a researcher.

The university envisions that this innovative approach will pave the way for groundbreaking research by postgraduate students. One of the key areas of exploration will be the study of aggression and violence in a controlled, safe environment—an endeavor that may not be feasible in traditional offline settings.

How to get servers on Minecraft Xbox?

To get servers on Minecraft Xbox, launch the game and go to the main menu. Select the "Play" button and navigate to the "Servers" tab. Here, you will find a list of featured servers that you can join. These servers are curated and provided by Microsoft. Unfortunately, as of the latest updates, you cannot add non-featured servers directly on Xbox. Check the list regularly, as it may get updated with new servers.

How to add servers on Minecraft Xbox Series X?

Adding servers manually on Minecraft Xbox Series X is not straightforward due to platform restrictions. Players can only join featured servers. To access these, open Minecraft and go to the "Play" menu, then select the "Servers" tab to see the available servers. For custom servers, you can use a third-party application like BedrockTogether on your mobile device to act as a proxy, but this method isn't officially supported and requires additional setup.
