Oasis Revives Windows Mixed Reality Support on Windows 11

02 Sep 2025

After a year of restricted functionality with Windows Mixed Reality (MR) headsets on Windows 11, the emergence of Oasis, an unofficial SteamVR driver, is lending a long-awaited breath of fresh air for VR enthusiasts. This significant development comes courtesy of Microsoft engineer Matthieu Bucchianeri, whose experience spans various innovative projects including PlayStation VR and SpaceX.

A New Lease of Life for Headsets

With Windows 11 24H2 effectively disabling the VR capabilities of brands like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung, users found themselves at a standstill. Oasis introduces a lifeline, restoring the operational prowess of these headsets. By offering native SteamVR support, Oasis allows users to dive back into the immersive world of virtual reality with minimal requirements—only SteamVR itself is necessary.

Bucchianeri explains the complexity behind creating Oasis, involving extensive reverse engineering to master the compatibility intricacies. Despite the technical prowess it required, Oasis will remain a closed-source project, safeguarding against potential NDA breaches.

Technical Aspects and Restrictions

Oasis supports a broad range of functionalities central to a seamless VR experience. From headset and controller tracking to haptics and button configurations, each element has been meticulously addressed. Additionally, battery state awareness and basic monoscopic camera passthrough are integrated, enhancing the usability of headsets such as the HP Reverb G2 and Samsung Odyssey. Importantly, eye-tracking features are included for compatible devices.

A noteworthy limitation exists within the driver—Oasis currently supports only NVIDIA graphics cards. Bucchianeri notes that ongoing engagement with AMD and Intel could expand compatibility. He has already provided AMD with the necessary technical documentation, suggesting that the ball is in AMD’s court to implement the required changes.

Also, Oasis does not handle the Bluetooth features for controller pairing, necessitating a PC Bluetooth adapter for this purpose. Users are advised to follow the provided setup instructions precisely, ensuring that controllers and headsets are unlocked and paired correctly before use.

  • Headset compatibility: Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung.
  • Necessary components: SteamVR and PC Bluetooth adapter.
  • Graphics card compatibility: NVIDIA only, pending further developments for AMD and Intel.

The Road Ahead

The arrival of Oasis offers a promising resurgence for Windows MR on Windows 11, highlighted by feedback from platforms like UploadVR, which have verified its capabilities specifically with the HP Reverb G2. The community now eagerly waits to see how manufacturers like AMD and Intel respond to this pioneering development. Bucchianeri’s contribution marks a commendable step forward for VR functionality, rekindling possibilities for those bound by former software limitations.
