Microsoft is working on enhancing File Explorer's performance in Windows 11 through background preloading. This change is available in the Insider Preview Build 26220.7271 (KB5070307) for the Dev and Beta channels. Microsoft says this will speed up launch times without affecting other functionalities.
Performance Features
The proposed update aims to reduce the time it takes for File Explorer to open by preloading components. Users can disable preloading if they prefer the standard operation. This can be done through Folder Options by deselecting 'Enable window preloading' under the View tab.
Microsoft seeks user feedback on this feature via the Feedback Hub under 'File Explorer Performance.'
Functionality Updates
Beyond speed improvements, File Explorer's user interface is being updated. The context menu is now less cluttered but retains essential commands prominently. The Manage file flyout has been enhanced to include actions like 'Compress to ZIP' and 'Rotate left/right.'
Cloud-specific commands are reorganized under provider-specific flyouts. The option 'Send to My Phone' now appears alongside these cloud options. Additionally, the 'Open folder location' command has been positioned next to 'Open' and 'Open with' for more intuitive access.
