File Explorer Dark Mode Comes to Windows 11 Insider Builds

25 Aug 2025

In a noteworthy update for Windows 11 enthusiasts, recent Insider builds have unveiled a hidden gem that many users have been keenly awaiting: dark mode support for File Explorer dialog boxes. While the primary File Explorer window has embraced the soothing aesthetic of dark mode, its auxiliary dialog boxes have remained stubbornly bright until now.

Unveiling the Secret Dark Mode

Present in Beta build 26120.5751 and Dev build 26200.5751, these dark dialogs are currently not accessible by default in the standard production operating system. However, for those using the latest Windows 11 Insider builds, there is a way to unlock this feature through a set of simple steps. Enter ViveTool, a versatile utility cherished by tech-savvy users for its ability to activate concealed Windows features.

These builds, released on August 15, 2025, allow enthusiastic participants of the Windows Insider Program to explore this visual enhancement. By default, the dialog boxes associated with File Explorer, such as copy progress, delete confirmations, and access denied prompts, have defied the dark theme, but this is set to change.

Activating Dark Dialog Boxes

  1. Ensure you are running a Windows 11 Beta or Dev Insider build with the versions mentioned above. Joining the Insider Program is easy via Settings -> Windows Update -> Windows Insider Program.
  2. To align the system with dark mode, navigate to Settings -> Personalization -> Colors and choose the Dark mode option. If Windows isn't activated, modify the registry values for AppsUseLightTheme and SystemUsesLightTheme to 0 at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize, followed by a reboot.
  3. After downloading and unzipping ViveTool to a directory (e.g., C:\vive), open an elevated command prompt, navigate to the tool's directory (cd C:\vive), and execute: vivetool /enable /id:57857165,57994323,48433719,49453572.
  4. Conclude the process with a reboot and launch File Explorer. Users will notice the child dialog boxes now sport dark backgrounds, although some buttons may display varying shades of gray.

As Microsoft gradually introduces dark mode support across its system dialogs, File Explorer's transition marks a significant step towards a consistent user experience. Other system dialogs, such as Run and Control Panel, have yet to receive this dark mode treatment. This meticulous approach signifies Microsoft's commitment to refining visual aspects with each update, keeping user satisfaction at the forefront of its developmental endeavors.
