In a pioneering move, Microsoft is enriching the functionality of its File Explorer by integrating new AI actions into Windows 11. The innovative features allow users to interact more efficiently with images and documents, significantly optimizing the workflow by minimizing the need to open files.

Currently available to Windows Insiders on the Canary Channel as part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27938, these AI-driven tools offer a suite of capabilities. Of particular note is the ability to remove backgrounds, erase objects, and blur backgrounds in image files such as JPG, JPEG, and PNG. This suite of tools also includes a reverse image search feature powered by Bing, catering to users' growing need for more comprehensive image interaction.

Interactive File Management

The vision behind AI actions, as articulated by Microsoft’s Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc, is to deepen user engagement with their files. By simply right-clicking on a supported image, users can unleash a range of quick actions like editing images or summarizing documents without straying from their current workflow. This mirrors functionality seen in Microsoft's Click to Do, allowing users to maintain their focus while harnessing AI-powered editing tools found in applications or the Copilot functionality—all without needing to open the actual file.

These AI actions are accessed via a new entry in the contextual menu, further embedding the AI-driven ease of use into everyday file management. This seamless integration acknowledges the natural flow users prefer, whereby technological complexity is effortlessly navigated.

Control and Accessibility

Microsoft is also advancing user autonomy in managing AI tools. The recent update includes enhancements within the Settings menu under Privacy & security > Text and image generation. This functionality allows users to see which third-party applications have utilized Windows' generative AI models and provides controls over which applications are permitted to access these tools.

This adjustment is part of a broader move by Microsoft to simplify settings modification on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Users can leverage natural language prompts to adjust settings, elevating the overall user experience and accessibility.

Microsoft's strides with AI actions in File Explorer underscore its commitment to enhancing productivity through thoughtful innovation. By allowing users to perform complex tasks with simplicity and ease, Microsoft is not only advancing the capabilities of its operating system but also shaping the future of how users engage with digital content.
