Microsoft has announced the release of Windows Backup for Organizations, a new enterprise-grade backup tool designed to aid transitions from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The feature is part of the September 2025 Windows Monthly Cumulative Update.
Enterprise Integration
Available for devices joined to Microsoft's Entra, Windows Backup for Organizations must be enabled through IT policy settings. Once activated, it allows the backup of Windows settings, preferences, and applications installed via Microsoft Store. This functionality supports seamless transitions to Windows 11 by ensuring a consistent user experience across systems.
This feature offers robust backup and rapid recovery capabilities, essential for maintaining business continuity. Data backed up via this tool is stored in Exchange Online, with storage locations configurable during tenant creation.
Data Protection and Security
Microsoft ensures that customer data is safeguarded with encryption and is only accessible under strict management oversight for necessary purposes, such as legal compliance or troubleshooting. The company emphasizes that customer data is used exclusively for purposes that align with contracted services, enhancing features like malware protection.
The announcement follows the public preview of Windows Backup for Organizations, marking its transition towards widespread availability across compatible devices.
