As organizations continue the complex journey from Windows 10 to Windows 11, Microsoft offers a much-needed reprieve with the release of Windows Backup for Organizations. Announced at Ignite 2024, this new service aims to streamline the migration of user settings and app preferences, alleviating some of the stress associated with operating system upgrades.
Streamlined Migration Process
Windows Backup is not a typical backup utility; it doesn't save data files, folders, or applications. Instead, it focuses on preserving a user’s Windows settings and Microsoft Store app list. This clever approach ensures that when users upgrade their machines or transition to a new one, their configurations—such as display, accessibility, and language settings—are easily restored, fostering seamless setup on Windows 11 systems.
The simplified process aids administrators by reducing the complexities associated with tools like Microsoft's User State Migration Tool (USMT). With Windows Backup integrated as part of Intune MDM or through Entra ID Group Policy, the restoration is as simple as signing in with a Microsoft Entra ID account. Users have the option to manually trigger a backup as well, providing flexibility for different organizational needs.
Supporting Device Continuity
Miranda Leschke, a Microsoft program manager, highlights that the utility is especially valuable for large-scale device transitions. It helps cut down administrative overhead and minimize user disruption, thereby strengthening device resilience.Windows Backup for Organizations is designed to be automatic. After initial setup, backups are configured to run every eight days, ensuring that user preferences are regularly saved within the company’s tenant data store.
This feature supports devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, with the critical restoration function available only in Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer. An additional requirement is the application of the August 2025 Windows security update. Hybrid on-premises domains also benefit if they have systems bridging Active Directory to Entra ID.
A Timely Innovation
With Windows 10's end of support dated for October 14, 2025, Windows Backup offers a pathway to ease organizations' shift to Windows 11. The gradual rollout of the restore settings emphasizes readiness and resilience, facilitating smoother transitions and uninterrupted business operations.
