Checkmate

Achieve victory by putting the opponent's king in a position where it cannot escape capture.

Castling

Move the king two squares towards a rook on the player's first rank, then move the rook to the square over which the king crossed.

En passant

Capture an opponent's pawn immediately after it moves two squares forward from its starting position.

Promotion

When a pawn reaches the opponent's back rank, it can be promoted to any other piece (except a king).

Stalemate

A situation in which the player whose turn it is to move has no legal move and their king is not in check.

Fork

A tactic in which a single piece makes two or more direct attacks simultaneously.
