Meta will discontinue its standalone Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac effective December 15, 2025. Going forward, users attempting to access Messenger on desktop devices will be redirected to Facebook.com. Those without a Facebook account will be redirected to Messenger.com instead.
App Transition and User Guidance
User notifications about the deprecation process will appear via the desktop apps. Mac users specifically will have a 60-day window to continue using the app after notification, after which they will be advised to uninstall it. It will become inoperable post-deprecation.
- Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac end on 2025-12-15.
- Notifications to users will commence once the deprecation process starts.
- Users will have 60 days to transition from the Mac Messenger app.
Security and Data Management
Meta encourages users to activate Messenger's secure storage feature and set up a security PIN to retain their chat history when moving to the web version. After moving, users can access chat history across all platforms. The secure storage settings are found under Privacy & Safety in the Messenger settings.
In 2014, Meta had separated Messenger into an independent app, later considering, but not executing, its integration with Instagram Direct in 2023.
