Meta has announced the discontinuation of its standalone Messenger apps for Windows and Mac, with service expected to cease around 2025-12-15. Users will be redirected to Messenger.com or Facebook.com depending on their account settings after the shutdown.
Shift to Web-Based Messaging
Meta's move follows its strategy to transition towards web-based messaging solutions. Following the launch of a Progressive Web App (PWA) for Messenger in 2024, users have been able to access familiar functions through a browser, eliminating the need for separate updates and easing maintenance.
User Guidance and Backup
Meta advises users to back up their messages and media before the shutdown. Features like secure storage and a personal PIN are recommended to safeguard chat history during migration to web-based or mobile Messenger apps. New desktop installations had already stopped when the app was removed from the Mac App Store earlier this year.
Unified Messaging Strategy
This decision aligns with Meta's broader strategy to integrate messaging services across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Additionally, enhancements to the Threads app, including the introduction of private messaging, are part of Meta's effort to boost engagement and remain competitive in the social media space.
