Meta will shut down the Facebook Messenger standalone app for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac on 2023-12-15, redirecting users to the Facebook desktop app or website.
Access Alternatives and Changes
After the shutdown, users will no longer be able to log into the Messenger app on their desktop. Instead, users will be redirected to the Facebook desktop app for Windows or the Facebook website for Mac to continue messaging.
Despite this change, Messenger remains accessible via mobile apps, the web, or through Facebook.
Guidelines for Chat History
Meta advises users to ensure their chat history is securely stored. To set up secure storage, users should navigate to their profile photo and follow: Privacy & Safety → End-to-end Encrypted Chats → Message Storage → Turn on Secure Storage. Meta recommends setting up a PIN from the desktop app before transitioning to Facebook's website for seamless access.
Once secure storage is activated, chat history will be accessible across all Messenger platforms.
