When users upload photos to the cloud, they are often analyzed by automated systems rather than humans, primarily to detect illegal content like child exploitation. While some images may be flagged for review by human moderators, individual company practices regarding photos differ widely.
Photo Analysis Practices
In July 2025, it was revealed that Meta had been using uploaded photos to train AI models. Although Meta stated they no longer train current models this way, they have not ruled out other forms of analysis. Meta also provides an opt-in feature for analyzing on-device photos.
Other companies clearly specify that they do not analyze photos for training without explicit sharing with third parties. However, the complexity of privacy policies and terms of service makes exact practices uncertain.
Privacy Considerations
Given the widespread use of AI and data sales, it is advisable to assume that uploaded or shared content might be used for AI training or even sold as data. The legal protections afforded to users vary by region, with EU regulations differing from those in the U.S. Users should keep local data protection laws in mind.
Practically, assume your uploaded photos may be accessed more broadly than intended. Review privacy settings, company policies, and local regulations before uploading photos.
