Microsoft Edge Enhances PDF Features with New Translation and Reading Tools

Microsoft Edge Enhances PDF Capabilities

Microsoft Edge is poised to enhance its PDF capabilities, particularly in the realms of reading aloud and translation. Users currently have the ability to select text for translation or audio reading; however, the existing functionality has faced criticism for its limitations. In response, Microsoft is actively testing improvements to these features, with at least two new functionalities on the horizon for the Windows version of Edge.

Recent discoveries by Windows Latest have unveiled new feature flags in a Canary build of Microsoft Edge, specifically msPdfLanguageDetection and msFullPdfTranslate. Attempts to activate these features in Edge Canary have not yet yielded results, but their potential is noteworthy.

Enhanced Language Detection and Full-Page Translation

The msPdfLanguageDetection feature aims to address current translation challenges within PDF files. While the translation works seamlessly for English to other languages, issues arise when attempting to translate text highlighted in languages other than English, often resulting in nonsensical outputs. This new feature is expected to improve language detection upon opening PDF files, thereby enhancing the overall user experience.

On the other hand, the msFullPdfTranslate feature promises to revolutionize the translation process by allowing full-page translations. Currently, users are limited to translating a maximum of 3,000 characters at a time, necessitating repetitive highlighting and translating. With the introduction of this feature, users will simply click a button to translate the entire document, streamlining the workflow significantly.

Transition to Adobe-Powered PDF Viewer

In conjunction with these PDF enhancements, Microsoft has announced plans to phase out its built-in PDF engine in favor of an Adobe-powered viewer. This transition is already underway, with the Adobe integration available to all Edge users, although some may have opted out via edge://flags/ (New PDF Viewer flag). The original PDF engine is set to be retired by 2025.

Multiple UI Changes Arriving in Settings

Additionally, Microsoft is addressing the cluttered settings page of Edge, which has been a point of contention among users. To improve navigation, the company will introduce quick settings and sub-sections, allowing users to access frequently visited options without the hassle of endless scrolling.

This organizational overhaul will categorize settings into a more user-friendly format, enabling users to locate and adjust related settings efficiently. This tidy presentation has been a staple of Chrome for some time, making it a welcome improvement for Edge users who have long awaited similar functionality.
