Windows developers around the globe are celebrating Microsoft's latest initiative to enhance inclusivity and accessibility within its platform. Microsoft has officially eliminated onboarding fees for developers aiming to publish their applications on the Microsoft Store. This sweeping change is set to bolster a wide range of app developers in nearly 200 countries, allowing them to register using a personal Microsoft account without the need for a credit card.
A More Inclusive Approach
Chetna Das, Senior Product Manager at Microsoft, emphasized that by removing the one-time $19 fee, the company aims to dismantle what has often been a significant barrier for creators worldwide. "Developers will no longer need a credit card to get started, removing a key point of friction that has affected many creators around the world," Das stated.
This move positions Microsoft favorably compared to other tech giants. While competitors such as Apple and Google maintain their developer fees, Microsoft’s strategy signifies a progressive shift towards a more inclusive digital economy. Apple still charges an annual $99 fee and Google a one-time $25 registration fee.
Boosting Innovation on Windows
With more than 250 million monthly active users, the Microsoft Store is already experiencing a steady increase in engagement. The elimination of fees is expected to incentivize developers, encouraging a broader spectrum of app offerings. By accommodating various application types — including Win32, UWP, PWA, .NET, MAUI, and Electron — Microsoft enhances the diversity of its app ecosystem.
Moreover, Microsoft permits developers of non-gaming apps to utilize their own in-app commerce systems. This enables developers to retain 100 percent of revenues, presenting an attractive proposition to burgeoning app creators.
Expanding the Developer Community
With the recent enhancements in download and installation experiences, Microsoft's move is tailored to provide an equally improved publishing experience. By fostering an environment that champions innovation without financial constraints, the Microsoft Store is positioned to become a hub for creative and technical talents. This initiative aligns with Microsoft's broader vision of empowering developers to thrive within the Windows ecosystem, thereby unlocking new potentials for users and developers alike.
