New Zealand Introduces Tourism-Themed Minecraft DLC

13 Apr 2025

Mojang Studios, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures, Piki Studios, and Tourism New Zealand, has launched an innovative Minecraft downloadable content (DLC) aimed at promoting the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of New Zealand. Available from March 19, the DLC arrives just in time for the highly anticipated release of A Minecraft Movie.

This initiative offers players a unique way to explore New Zealand, or Aotearoa as it is known in Māori, from the comfort of their own homes. Through this interactive platform, users can digitally traverse New Zealand's diverse terrain, taking part in activities and visiting sites of cultural significance.

Exploring New Zealand Digitally

The DLC features an array of immersive experiences, including canoeing through the crystal waters of Abel Tasman National Park. With its golden beaches and lush landscapes, Abel Tasman is a prime destination for water enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Players can also delve into the intricate labyrinths of the Waitomo Caves, renowned for their mesmerizing glowworm displays. The caves bring an element of mystique and wonder to the game, capturing the natural beauty that attracts tourists from across the globe.

Additionally, the geothermal wonders of Rotorua are intricately recreated, allowing users to virtually experience the steaming geysers and bubbling mud pools that make this location a must-see. Rotorua serves as a showcase for the geothermal activity that this region is famous for.

Celebrating Māori Culture

The DLC doesn’t just focus on landscapes but also celebrates the rich Māori culture, offering players an opportunity to engage with Māori traditions and customs. This cultural immersion is an integral aspect of the DLC, introducing players to the language, stories, and ceremonies that form the backbone of New Zealand's unique heritage.

René de Monchy, CEO of Tourism New Zealand, articulated the significance of this project, emphasizing that the DLC opens up experiences of New Zealand to a global audience. “We are thrilled to bring the essence of New Zealand into Minecraft, blending the virtual and the real to inspire potential visitors and celebrate our natural and cultural treasures,” de Monchy stated.

This bold initiative underscores New Zealand's commitment to using innovative approaches to tourism promotion. By integrating game technology with cultural storytelling, the collaboration aims to entice more tourists to explore the island nation in real life while fostering an appreciation for its beauty and traditions.

As the world becomes increasingly digital, such partnerships highlight the potential for creative solutions in tourism and cultural exchange. With the popularity of Minecraft and the broad reach of its platform, New Zealand's new DLC serves as both a virtual adventure and a heartfelt invitation to discover the wonders of Aotearoa.
