Warner Bros Advocates for Organic Fan Engagement at Events

25 Sep 2025

Warner Bros. is taking a measured stance on the growing trend of participatory theater experiences, such as the recent phenomena surrounding A Minecraft Movie screenings. At the forefront of this is the unexpected popularity of the 'chicken jockey' moment, which encapsulates how fan enthusiasm can elevate a film's success.

In the film industry’s latest display of vibrant crowd engagement, moviegoers attending A Minecraft Movie screenings have been seen shouting lines and cheering, transforming the conventional movie-watching experience into an animated communal event. The participation has extended beyond vocal expressions to include celebratory acts like throwing confetti and documenting the event for social media platforms like TikTok, further boosting the movie's visibility and box office performance.

Fan-Driven Phenomena

Warner Bros. co-chair Pam Abdy and executive Mike De Luca discussed this phenomenon, acknowledging its roots in genuine fan delight. They emphasized the importance of fan-driven experiences, distinguishing them from studio-engineered events. Citing historical examples such as Beetlejuice and Minions, Abdy and De Luca argue that efforts to artificially replicate this energy often fall flat.

In the eyes of the studio, participatory screenings serve as an exciting avenue for audience interaction, capable of enriching the experience across generations. However, Warner Bros. cautions that the enthusiasm can occasionally verge beyond acceptable boundaries, leading to disruptions that need to be managed delicately.

The studio’s management believes that while this kind of participation can immensely benefit a film, encouraging it should be a delicate balance. “Let fans organically create these environments,” Abdy suggests, warning that theatrical magic is often diluted when studios attempt to manufacture it.

Warner Bros. remains committed to welcoming fan participation that emerges naturally. This approach, they argue, maintains the integrity of the filmmaking process while ensuring that each screening continues to captivate and entertain in its unique way.
