According to Aaron Rose, a security architect manager, the threat primarily comes from third-party mods for the Java Edition of Minecraft. Unlike the Bedrock Edition, which includes a built-in, reviewed marketplace for players, the Java Edition allows users to download mods from various third-party websites. This freedom increases the risk of exposure to malware, which can infiltrate unsuspecting computers.
The malware, often hidden within these mods, acts much like a Trojan horse. Once installed, it can be remotely controlled to steal sensitive information, install keyloggers, capture screenshots, or even search for cryptocurrency wallets.
