Google has officially launched Now Playing as a standalone app on the Play Store, transforming a previously hidden Pixel feature into a more accessible tool. This change allows users to benefit from enhanced visibility and functionality, as Now Playing can now be updated directly through the Play Store.
Offline Music Recognition
Unlike other music recognition apps like Shazam, Now Playing operates using an on-device database of song fingerprints. This allows it to identify music instantly without the need to send audio data to the cloud, ensuring privacy and speed. Users can enjoy automatic song recognition on their lock screens and access a searchable history of identified tracks.
UI Enhancements and Accessibility
Google is testing a refreshed user interface for Now Playing, featuring clearer album art, updated controls, and smoother navigation. Previously, the feature was accessible only through the Settings menu on Pixel phones, but as a standalone app, it simplifies access and enhances user experience. This move aligns Now Playing with other core Pixel features like Call Screen and Recorder, highlighting its importance within the Pixel ecosystem.
