Google's Now Playing feature on Pixel devices is set to transition into a standalone app, potentially enhancing its update frequency and functionality. Currently integrated into Android System Intelligence, Now Playing identifies songs playing in the background but has been limited in its ability to receive upgrades.
Standalone App Details
Version B.21 of Android System Intelligence includes strings indicating the development of a dedicated app for Now Playing. Users will be able to access their settings, song history, and other features through this new app. The app package name, com.google.android.apps.pixel.nowplaying, has been identified, and it will feature a new icon similar to the updated Now Playing history widget.
Expected Release and Features
According to 9to5Google, the standalone app could be released as early as next month, coinciding with the Pixel Feature Drop and the Android 16 QPR3 update. Although Google has not confirmed a specific release date, the move to a standalone app is expected to facilitate more frequent updates. Additionally, it may allow song history to sync across Android devices, though this feature has not been confirmed.
