Tim Cain, co-creator of the popular game Fallout, addressed the concept of canon versus interpretation for content properties.
Canon vs. Interpretation
In a vlog titled “Let's Talk About Canon,” Cain outlined his views on what constitutes canon within a franchise like Fallout. According to Cain, canon is simply what the IP owner states it is. This declaration leaves room for personal interpretation as a separate and valid form of engagement.
Cain emphasizes that individual interpretations of characters, like Harold in Fallout, remain valid if acknowledged as personal interpretation, despite differing from official canon. Harold, a character bearing a tree growing from his head, has been subject to debate among fans over whether he is a virus-infected mutant or a radiation-poisoned ghoul. Cain affirms that these different interpretations coexist as long as creators recognize official canon set by IP owners.
Authorial Intent and Community Views
Cain noted that authorial intent might diverge among different creators and warned against letting the community majority redefine canon. Referencing the essay “Death of the Author,” he explained the importance of separating authorial intent from critical interpretation, a distinction often blurred in forums.
The debate on canon, he says, is less about establishing a single truth and more about relevant parties sharing their interpretations. Cain reassures his audience that while he has authorial intent behind his creations, he welcomes other readings.
