OneNote Introduces Plain Text Paste Feature for Windows and Mac

25 Aug 2025

Microsoft has unveiled a new feature for its popular note-taking application, OneNote, addressing a long-standing request from users. The app, renowned for its versatility, lacked the ability to paste content as plain-text, often leading to unwanted formatting being transferred from the source. This change marks a significant enhancement in the app's functionality, streamlining the process for users on both Windows and Mac.

The update is rolling out with OneNote for Windows version 2508 (Build 19101.10000) or later, and for Mac, Build 16.100 (25080335) or later. Users with these updates will now find it easier to integrate clean, uncluttered content into their notes without the distraction of inconsistent fonts or colors.

Enhancing Note-Taking Flexibility

This feature allows users to paste text without preserving the original formatting from the source material. To utilize this new capability, the user simply needs to open a notebook in OneNote and copy text from their source of choice. Upon pasting, users will be prompted to Keep Text Only, replacing the previous format-rich options. This can be done by right-clicking and selecting Paste Options > Keep Text Only, or by navigating to the Home tab and choosing Paste > Paste Options > Keep Text Only.

For those who prefer keyboard shortcuts, Microsoft has provided a simple combination to facilitate the process. On Windows, users can press Ctrl+Shift+V, while Mac users should use Command+Shift+V.

  • Step 1: Open a OneNote notebook.
  • Step 2: Copy the desired text from any source.
  • Step 3: Navigate to the position in your note where you want the text to appear.
  • Step 4: Use Paste Options > Keep Text Only to insert as plain text.

This update underscores Microsoft's commitment to enhancing user accessibility and efficiency within its suite of applications. The addition of the 'paste text only' option is likely to be welcomed by students, professionals, and anyone who uses OneNote extensively for organizing their tasks and ideas. As feedback pours in from users around the globe, Microsoft continues to refine and expand its digital tools, aiming to improve user experience across its platforms.
