Microsoft's note-taking service, OneNote, has introduced a new paste feature that is set to enhance the user experience significantly. As of August 2025, OneNote users can now paste text without carrying over the original formatting. This update comes in response to user feedback regarding issues like mismatched fonts, awkward background colors, and unwanted styles when transferring text from other applications into OneNote notebooks.
An Improved Pasting Method
This new text-only pasting feature allows users to bring content into OneNote as plain text, aligning seamlessly with the notebook's existing look and feel. The feature is activated via the following shortcuts: Ctrl+Shift+V for Windows users and Cmd+Shift+V for Mac users. Alternatively, users can right-click, select Paste options, and choose "Keep text only" for the text to match the current document style automatically.
OneNote Product Manager Bola Soneye expressed that this feature aims to simplify the process of gathering information from various sources, making it more efficient for users who frequently compile data across different platforms. The feature ensures that pasting into OneNote becomes a streamlined part of the workflow, allowing for a tidy and professional appearance of notes.
Availability Across Platforms
The paste without formatting function is available with the Windows 2508 (Build 19101.10000) or later, Mac Build 16.100 (25080335) or later, and also on the web version of OneNote. Microsoft has a history of testing new features with a select group of users through its Insiders program to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments before a wider rollout. Thus, Insiders may have access to this feature prior to its full public release.
This development in OneNote represents Microsoft's continued dedication to improving user interactivity and productivity. By offering a more cohesive and visual appealing note-taking experience, Microsoft is not only meeting contemporary user needs but also setting the bar for consistency across digital platforms.
