Microsoft has released a fix for Windows 11, targeting issues that affected USB devices in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). The problem emerged after the October 2025 security update (KB5066835), causing USB keyboards and mice to stop working in recovery mode, though they operated normally within the main OS.
Release Timing and Scope
On 2025-10-19, Microsoft acknowledged the issue and issued an out-of-band update six days later. This fix is being distributed via Windows Update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, as well as Windows Server 2025. Users are advised to avoid resetting their PCs or entering recovery mode until the update has been installed.
Other Known Issues
Alongside the USB issue, the October update introduced several other problems. These included issues with smartcard authentication, playback for some DVD and Blu-ray applications, failed updates using shared network folders, and possible IIS site loading failures. Most of these issues have been mitigated, apart from the IIS website problem.
Impact and Next Steps
Microsoft's recent updates have faced multiple challenges, including earlier Patch Tuesday disruptions and upgrade path errors leading to crashes in Windows Server 2025. Users should ensure they apply the latest updates promptly to maintain system stability and functionality.
