Bloatware Removal Options for Android Devices

23 Feb 2026

Managing bloatware on Android devices, such as Google Pixel and Samsung, can enhance performance and reduce clutter.

Preinstalled Apps on Android

Bloatware refers to preinstalled or bundled apps on Android devices that can occupy space and clutter the home screen. These apps are typically installed by the phone manufacturer or carrier. While not malicious, they are often unwanted. For instance, Google Pixel devices do not allow the removal of apps like Chrome, Maps, Drive, or Calculator. Similarly, Samsung phones have default apps that cannot be deleted, though some, like Samsung Free and Samsung TV Plus, can be removed.

Uninstalling and Disabling Apps

Users can uninstall apps by holding the home-screen icon and selecting “Uninstall,” or through device settings. On Google Pixel, users can open the Play Store, tap the profile icon, navigate to Manage apps & devices > Manage, select the app, and tap Uninstall. On Samsung devices, users can go to Settings > Apps, tap the app name, and select Uninstall. For bulk uninstallation from the home screen, long-press an icon, choose Select, tap additional apps, and then tap Uninstall.

Advanced Removal Techniques

For apps that cannot be uninstalled through standard methods, the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) offers a more advanced option. However, using ADB requires technical expertise. Alternatively, users can disable apps, which hides the icon and prevents them from running, though it does not free up storage. On Pixel, this can be done via Settings > Apps > See all apps, selecting the app, and tapping Disable. On Samsung, the process is similar through Settings > Apps or by long-pressing the home-screen icon and choosing Disable or Remove.
